JOB SUMMARY 

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner. Heavy equipment may include dumb truck, front-end loaders, backhoe, dozers, graders, compactors, tractors and other pieces of equipment. Involved in the construction of primary and secondary agricultural farm roads (private roads), irrigation pipelines or similar projects.  Maintaining and securing all equipment is in safe working order and report any mechanical or safety issues to the mechanic shop. Perform other farm operations tasks as needed within facilities maintenance.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  • Construction of primary and secondary farm roads. Use equipment to level road and ensure proper drainage.

  • Ensure that primary and secondary passage roads are safe and adequately maintained to handle farm traffic.

  • Retrieve, move and spread road construction material including rock, clay and sand.

  • Maintain right of way roads through the appropriate use of grading and rotavating techniques.

  • Inspects roads daily to determine repair needs.

  • Using various types of equipment to mow and maintain designated areas of the nursery and right of ways.

  • Maintaining and securing all equipment is in safe working order and report any mechanical or safety issues to the mechanic shop.

  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.

  • Clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required.

  • Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.

  • Practice workplace safety.

  • All other duties assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Two or more years of recent experience operating heavy equipment preferably in road or highway construction, or farming activities.

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment machinery in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Mechanically inclined, some working knowledge of small and large heavy equipment.

  • High School grad or GED equivalent preferred. 

  • Literacy skills to interpret equipment manuals.

  • Able to work independently, plan, organize and function with minimal amount of supervision.

  • Irrigation experience. Possibly some electrical.

REQUIRED LICENSES / HOURS OF WORK 

  • Valid Driver’s License and clean MVR record.

  • Heavy Equipment Operator Certification preferred. 

  • A CDL license is a plus.
