Large Container Tree Maintenance Laborer

JOB SUMMARY 

The Large Container (LC) Tree Maintenance Laborer performs various manual tasks associated with the maintenance and growth of large container horticulture trees and palms (15+gallon).  Manual tasks for the growing of nursery stock will include some combination of the following: tree & palm maintenance, pruning, staking, cleaning, applying fertilizer, removing weeds and debris; and operation of hand tools, powered equipment tools and earth moving equipment. Knowledge of horticulture  a plus. Proper pruning techniques to yield the best products and follow all safety procedures and regulations.  

5 Immediate Openings:  these are full-time permanent year round openings to be part of our core group member.

JOB DUTIES 

  • Prune trees correctly by applying techniques based on species tree type and Florida Grades and Standards requirements.

  • Staking trees with bamboo or metal using proper protocols.

  • Using tie tape for staking bamboo to trunk and tying leaders of trees.

  • Lift and straighten container trees as needed.

  • Check and adjust collars/wraps as needed.

  • Apply top-dress and sub-dress dibble fertilizer to containers.

  • Maintain and clean sections: weeding, remove leaf litter, suckers and trash.

  • Utilize various hand tools and small engine gas powered equipment.

  • Maintain all equipment and tools in working order.  

  • Operation of farm tractor (earth moving equipment).

  • Keep work area and equipment /supplies clean and in good working order.

  • Adhere and implement all safety requirements and regulations.

  • Keep Team Leader informed of issues and challenges.

  • Observe safety rules at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Requires a minimum of 3+ months of prior experience working in a nursery, tree farm, agriculture or related field.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus but not required
  • Valid Drivers License and clean MVR a plus
 

HOURS OF WORK & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Monday through  Saturday, start and end times vary depending on organizational needs. May be required to work additional hours during peak times or as needed.
  • Work can be repetitive and physically demanding, requiring frequent bending, lifting, and shoveling.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather (heat or cold), and moving mechanical equipment.
